Bangladesh Government Says No Ban On IPL Telecast In The Country, Says 'Politics And Sports Should Not Mix'

The Bangladesh government has indicated a major shift in its approach to sports broadcasting by allowing the telecast of the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season.

The decision comes after uncertainty created by restrictions imposed by the previous interim administration.

Government Says No Ban on IPL Telecast

Zahir Uddin Swapan, the newly appointed information and broadcasting minister, made it clear that there is currently no restriction on airing IPL matches in Bangladesh. He stressed that the government does not want to mix politics with sports and will consider broadcast requests based on commercial factors.

According to him, if any television network applies for the rights to show IPL matches, the government will review the proposal in a fair and positive manner.

Focus on Commercial and Viewer Interests

The government's stance suggests a more practical approach, focusing on business and audience demand rather than political considerations. Officials have said that they are open to allowing both international and local broadcasters to air the tournament.

Swapan also indicated that Star Sports, which traditionally holds IPL broadcast rights in the region, could telecast the matches in Bangladesh if it chooses to do so. At the same time, local channels will also have the opportunity to apply for telecast rights.

Industry Bodies Also Support Telecast

Rezaul Karim Lablu, an office bearer of the Cable Operations Association of Bangladesh, echoed a similar view. He said there are currently no instructions preventing broadcasters from airing IPL matches.

He further clarified that directives issued by the previous interim government are no longer in effect. According to him, only the current government's policies will be followed, and any new instructions will be implemented accordingly.

The confusion over IPL telecast in Bangladesh began after the earlier administration imposed restrictions. The move was reportedly linked to a decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India involving Kolkata Knight Riders and Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman.
