Bangladesh Government Deploys Paramilitary Troops Amid Transport Blockade

...as a three-day nationwide transport blockade called by the main opposition BNP began on Tuesday, escalating tensions after two days of deadly violence this week.

In a bid to counter escalating tensions, the Bangladesh government has deployed paramilitary troops and directed law enforcement agencies to intensify security vigil. This follows a three-day nationwide transport blockade called by the main opposition party, BNP. The situation is particularly volatile after two days of deadly violence earlier this week.

paramilitary troops

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) confirmed that they have dispatched forces across the country while several hundred paramilitary personnel will be on patrol in Dhaka, the national capital. "A required number of BGB platoons are dispatched countrywide to maintain law and order and guard major highways," said a spokesperson from the paramilitary force. Alongside these measures, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), an elite anti-crime unit, announced their high alert status in major cities.

Government Response

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal convened a meeting with senior officials from police and other law enforcement agencies late Monday night to review the security situation. An official familiar with the meeting revealed that heads of law enforcement and intelligence agencies were instructed to stay extra vigilant against any act of sabotage or violence during the 72-hour opposition blockade.

Unrest Among Workers

The announcement for increased security comes after two garment workers died in clashes with police while demanding higher wages in Gazipur industrial district. The unrest among factory workers has been ongoing for over one week as negotiations between factory owners, labour representatives, and an earlier government-formed Wage Board failed to reach an agreement on wage hikes.

Violence Escalates

In addition to worker unrests, political tensions have also escalated leading up to general elections expected early next year. Over the weekend four people including an on-duty policeman were killed amidst protests staged by both ruling Awami League and opposition BNP. Despite increased security, violence ensued with a police constable hacked to death, several vehicles set on fire and over 200 people wounded.

Political Turmoil

The BNP's grand protest meeting was abruptly ended by police firing tear gas canisters to control "unruly elements". This led the opposition to call for a nationwide stoppage on Sunday when its de facto leader and secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was arrested for "instigating" violence. The day-long general strike saw two activists from ruling and main opposition parties killed amidst widespread violence.

In conclusion, Bangladesh is currently grappling with heightened tensions due to worker unrests demanding higher wages and escalating political conflicts ahead of upcoming elections. The government has responded by deploying paramilitary forces across the country while instructing law enforcement agencies to intensify their vigilance against potential acts of sabotage or violence during this period of turmoil.
