Bangladesh President Appoints Nobel Laureate Yunus as Interim Government Head

Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus was appointed as the head of Bangladesh's interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday. This decision followed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from the country amid violent protests against a controversial job quota system. The announcement came after a meeting at Bangabhaban involving the President, chiefs of the three services, and a 13-member delegation from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Yunus Welcomes Change

Yunus, who is currently abroad, welcomed the removal of Hasina’s regime, calling it the "second liberation of the country." He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work with the Grameen Bank, which has been emulated globally. Despite his achievements, Yunus had ongoing conflicts with Hasina’s government, leading to multiple investigations against him since she took office in 2008.

The President's Press Secretary Md. Joynal Abedin confirmed that Dr. Yunus was named chief adviser of the interim government after a four-hour-long meeting. The names of other advisers will be announced later following discussions with various political parties. The state-run BSS news agency reported that President Shahabuddin expressed a desire to include at least one veteran from the 1971 Liberation War in the interim cabinet.

Background of Conflict

In 2011, Bangladesh authorities reviewed Grameen Bank's activities and dismissed Yunus as its managing director for allegedly violating retirement regulations. He faced numerous legal challenges, including a six-month jail sentence in January for labour law violations. Many believe Hasina's animosity towards Yunus intensified when he considered forming a political party in 2007 while she was imprisoned and the country was under military-backed rule.

During the crucial meeting at Bangabhaban, notable attendees included Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Navy Chief Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, Dhaka University Law Department Professor Asif Nazrul, and International Relations Department Professor Tanzim Uddin Khan.

Future Steps

The interim government's formation marks a significant shift in Bangladesh's political landscape. The inclusion of advisers from different political backgrounds aims to ensure a balanced and representative interim administration. The next steps involve finalising the list of advisers and setting up an effective transitional government.

This development follows years of tension between Yunus and Hasina’s administration. Yunus had criticised Bangladeshi politicians in 2007 for being primarily interested in money, although he did not proceed with his plan to form a political party.

The appointment of Yunus as head of the interim government signifies a new chapter for Bangladesh. His leadership is expected to guide the country through this transitional period while addressing ongoing political challenges.
