Bangladesh: 2 days after Dhaka attack, Awami League leader gunned down

Dhaka, July 4: Two days after the horrific terror attack in an upscale restaurant in the Bangladesh capital in which 20 foreigners were butchered by young armed attackers, a leader of the ruling Awami League was killed by unidentified people at Teknaf in Cox's Bazar district of the country.

The killers stormed into the house of the deceased, Sirajul Islam, 68, at Pallanpara and opened indiscriminate firing. The latter collapsed and was declared dead at the hospital. Islam's wife Yasmin Akhtar was also seriously injured and is undergoing treatment in Cox's Bazar main.

The attackers ran away while firing in the air after the neighbours came to help after hearing the firing. Nobody has been held so far.

Sources in the hospital where Islam was taken said he was hit in his head and died due to too much bleeding.

Bangladesh has been in the headlines for the past several months due to the endless number of attacks carried out by the Islamic radicals against the religious minorities and liberal thinkers. The terror strike in Dhaka on July 1 has particularly brought the country under the scanner.
