Patients from King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and BNH Hospital were moved to a nearby park, some on stretchers and others in wheelchairs. Medical staff continued to provide care outside the hospital buildings.

Footage of the incident has circulated widely on social media, capturing the dramatic moment as the baby was born amid the chaos following the quake.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has risen to nearly 700 as more bodies are recovered from the rubble.

The quake struck near Mandalay on Friday afternoon, causing extensive destruction-collapsing buildings, damaging infrastructure, and breaching a dam.

According to state broadcaster MRTV, 1,000 people have been confirmed dead, with 1,670 injured and 68 still unaccounted for. Independent outlet The Irrawaddy cited the same figures.

The earthquake, followed by multiple aftershocks-including one registering 6.4 magnitude-wreaked havoc across the country. Buildings crumbled, roads fractured, and bridges collapsed, severely hampering rescue and recovery operations in an already fragile nation.

Among the fatalities were patients at a hospital in Naypyidaw, which doctors described to AFP as a potential "mass casualty area", worshippers at a Mandalay mosque that collapsed during prayers, and individuals at a university in the same city where a fire broke out.

Myanmar's junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, has warned that the death toll is likely to increase. He declared a state of emergency and appealed for international aid, calling on "any country and any organisation" to offer assistance.

Tremors were felt as far away as northern Thailand, prompting the temporary suspension of metro and rail services in Bangkok.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra cut short an official visit to Phuket to chair an emergency meeting, before declaring a state of emergency in the capital.
