Small Businesses Rally for Federal Loans Post-Baltimore Bridge Collapse
In a significant development following the tragic collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, the US Small Business Administration has reported receiving 500 applications for a federal loan program designed to support small businesses adversely affected by the incident. Isabella Casillas Guzman, head of the US Small Business Administration, announced that the funds, aimed at sustaining businesses during this critical period, are expected to be distributed within the forthcoming two weeks. This initiative comes as Baltimore's crucial port remains largely inaccessible to maritime traffic, posing severe challenges to local businesses, particularly those in transportation and supply chain logistics.

Guzman's visit to Baltimore on Thursday was marked by discussions with business owners and local and state leaders, emphasizing the broad impact of the bridge collapse on the region's economy. The port of Baltimore, known for handling more cars and farm equipment than any other in the country, is facing unprecedented logistical challenges, affecting shipping along the East Coast.
The assistance program offers low-interest loans of up to USD 2 million to help businesses stay afloat. In a related development, the Maryland Senate has unanimously passed a bill authorizing the governor to utilize the state's rainy day fund to support unemployed port workers. This legislation also aims to prevent layoffs among small businesses and encourage companies that have relocated to return once the port is operational again.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a Norwegian shipping firm with a hub in Baltimore, estimates its losses due to the port closure to be between USD 5 million and USD 10 million. The firm has one of its ships among several currently stranded in Baltimore's harbor. The situation has drawn national attention, with President Joe Biden expected to visit the site of the collapse on Friday.
The Key Bridge met its fate on March 26 after being struck by the cargo ship Dali, which had lost power shortly after departing Baltimore for Sri Lanka. Despite a mayday alert that allowed police to halt traffic, six workers engaged in roadwork on the bridge are believed to have perished in the collapse. Efforts are ongoing to clear the wreckage and recover bodies, complicated by adverse weather conditions this week. Temporary channels have been opened for vessels involved in cleanup operations, with plans for a third channel for larger vessels underway.
Divers and sonar technology are being employed to assess and map the wreckage lying at the bottom of the Patapsco River. A large floating crane, affectionately nicknamed "Chessy," is playing a crucial role in salvage efforts. This tragedy not only highlights the importance of infrastructure safety but also underscores the resilience of Baltimore's community and its determination to recover from this devastating event.
