A backcountry skier has tragically lost their life on New Hampshire's Mount Washington, known for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Tuckerman Ravine, a popular destination for backcountry skiers. The skier, identified as Madison Saltsburg, fell approximately 600 vertical feet (183 meters) in steep terrain characterized by hard and icy conditions.

Rescue Efforts in Treacherous Conditions

Despite the challenging circumstances, rescue efforts were initiated promptly. Two individuals were successfully rescued during a search operation that extended through a stormy night and into Sunday morning. However, the harsh weather conditions, including snow, wind, and limited cellphone coverage, posed significant obstacles for the rescuers.

Additional Injuries Reported

In addition to the tragic loss of life, two other individuals sustained injuries during the incident. They suffered traumatic injuries from rocks and ice, but their conditions were not considered life-threatening. The US Forest Service, responsible for managing the area, acknowledged the strenuous efforts of the snow rangers and emergency personnel involved in the rescue operation.

Just a day before the tragic incident involving the backcountry skier, New Hampshire Fish and Game reported the rescue of a 23-year-old hiker from Kentucky. The hiker had ventured off the trail and into the Ammonoosuc Ravine, where he fell, hit his head and face, lost a sneaker, and eventually became hypothermic. Fortunately, he was provided with essential supplies and escorted back to safety.

The unfortunate incident on Mount Washington highlights the importance of safety precautions and adequate preparation when engaging in outdoor activities in challenging environments.
