Australian PM Condemns 'Horrific Act Of Violence' At Sydney Shopping Centre

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described the attack at a Sydney shopping centre, which claimed six lives, as a "horrific act of violence" that is "beyond words or understanding." The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon at Westfield Bondi Junction when a man with a knife was shot dead by a police officer just after 3pm. Albanese expressed shock at the indiscriminate targeting of innocent people going about their ordinary Saturday shopping.

He extended the nation's deepest condolences and sympathies to the victims and their loved ones, while also acknowledging the strength and heroism displayed by health workers caring for the injured, including a baby, who were rushed to hospital. Albanese praised the humanity and heroism of those who rushed to help the injured, highlighting the bravery of police, first responders, and everyday people who found themselves facing an unimaginable situation.

Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police Reece Kershaw stated that the AFP is supporting NSW Police in their investigation. He emphasized that it is too early to determine a motive and cautioned against speculation. The AFP has deployed members to the crime scene and offered specialist capabilities, such as digital forensics, to assist in the investigation. Kershaw reassured the community that the AFP is providing whatever support is necessary and has also been in contact with the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

The suspect stabbed nine people at the Westfield Shopping Centre in Bondi Junction, which is in the city's eastern suburbs, before a police inspector shot him after he turned and raised a knife, New South Wales Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters. Six of the victims and the suspect died. Police had no specific details on the condition of the injured.
