Australian Journalist Lauren Tomasi Shot During Live Coverage Of Anti-Immigration Protests In LA - Watch

An Australian journalist was struck by a rubber bullet while reporting live from the escalating anti-immigration protests in Los Angeles. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, was caught on camera and has since gone viral. Lauren Tomasi, a US correspondent for Nine News, was shot in the leg while delivering a live update amid the chaos.

In the video, Tomasi can be heard describing the situation: "After hours of standing off, this situation has now rapidly deteriorated, the LAPD moving in on horseback, firing rubber bullets at protesters, moving them on through the heart of LA." Moments later, a rubber bullet struck her on the leg. A bystander shouted at police, "You just f***ing shot the reporter!" while another asked Tomasi if she was alright. She responded, "I'm good."

Nine News issued a statement confirming that both Lauren Tomasi and her camera operator were unharmed and will continue reporting on the ground. "This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers journalists can face while reporting from the frontlines of protests, underscoring the importance of their role in providing vital information," the network said, as quoted by The Guardian.

The protests in Los Angeles turned volatile on Sunday as thousands gathered in opposition to President Donald Trump's controversial move to take federal control of California's state military. This move, which resulted in deploying federal troops into Los Angeles, was sharply criticized by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who called it "purposefully inflammatory." According to US media, such a measure has not been witnessed in decades.

Trump Orders Crackdown Amid LA Unrest

Amid the rising unrest, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) declared the entire Downtown LA area an "unlawful assembly." Authorities issued a warning on social media platform X, urging citizens to leave the area immediately.

President Trump has also directed the immediate arrest of protestors wearing masks, further intensifying the law enforcement response. Security forces on horseback, clad in riot gear, have been deployed to secure federal buildings and disperse crowds.

The situation followed two days of confrontations between protestors and federal agents. Authorities reportedly used flash-bang grenades and tear gas against demonstrators, many of whom were outraged by the arrest of dozens of undocumented migrants. Los Angeles, known for its significant Latino population, has become a flashpoint in Trump's broader immigration crackdown.

Since taking office in January, President Trump has made good on his promise to clamp down on illegal immigration, repeatedly referring to undocumented migrants as "monsters" and "animals." The latest developments mark one of the most severe federal crackdowns in recent U.S. urban protests in recent history.
