Donald Trump Target of Attempted Assassination at Florida Golf Club, FBI Confirms

Donald Trump was the target of an attempted assassination at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to the FBI. This incident occurred just nine weeks after another attempt on his life. Trump confirmed he was safe, and authorities detained a suspect.

Trump Assassination Attempt Foiled

US Secret Service agents noticed an AK-style rifle's muzzle through the shrubbery lining the course, about 400 yards away. An agent fired, causing the gunman to drop the rifle and flee in an SUV. The suspect left behind two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro camera. He was later apprehended in a neighbouring county.

Increased Security Measures

Trump's security has been heightened since the July assassination attempt. At Trump Tower in New York, dump trucks form a wall outside the building. During outdoor rallies, he speaks from behind bulletproof glass. The Florida golf course was partially shut down for Trump as he played.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff noted that if Trump were still president, the entire golf course would have been lined with law enforcement. "But because he is not, security is limited to areas deemed possible by the Secret Service," said Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

Details of the Incident

The suspect, identified as Ryan Routh by three law enforcement officials, was apprehended within minutes of a "be on the lookout" alert issued by the FBI, Secret Service, and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder said deputies quickly located and stopped the vehicle.

Snyder described Routh as having a calm demeanour and showing little emotion when stopped by police. "He never questioned why he was being pulled over," Snyder said.

Reactions and Statements

In an email to supporters after the incident, Trump stated: "There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!" He added: "Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!"

Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, expressed relief online: "I'm glad President Trump is safe. I spoke to him before the news was public and he was, amazingly, in good spirits." The White House also expressed relief that Trump was unharmed.

Campaign Schedule

It remains unclear whether this incident will affect Trump's campaign schedule. He was set to speak about cryptocurrency live on Monday night on X for his son's crypto platform launch. He also planned a town hall in Flint, Michigan with former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and a rally on Long Island.

Fox News host Sean Hannity spoke with both Trump and his golf partner Steve Witkoff after the incident. They recounted hearing "pop pop" sounds before Secret Service agents quickly protected Trump.

Ongoing Investigation

The FBI is leading the investigation to determine any motive behind the attempted assassination. Attorney General Merrick Garland is receiving regular updates on the case. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also involved in the investigation.

Former presidents receive Secret Service protection for life, but security levels vary based on threat levels and exposure. Trump's protective detail has been higher due to his high visibility and ongoing presidential campaign.

This latest incident adds to a campaign year marked by significant upheaval. On July 13, Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Eight days later, Democratic President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to become the party's nominee.

The FBI stated: "The FBI has responded to West Palm Beach Florida and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump." The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover more details about this alarming event.
