Cellular Outages Hit AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Cricket Wireless Customers
In a widespread disruption, numerous Americans across the United States are facing cellular service outages affecting major carriers such as AT&T, Cricket Wireless, Verizon, T-Mobile, and others. According to data from Downdetector, a platform that tracks outages, AT&T, the most severely impacted carrier, is actively working to restore service to its customers.

AT&T Outage Affects Millions
AT&T experienced a significant outage, with over 58,000 reported incidents at its peak around noon Eastern Time (ET). The outages, which began at approximately 3:30 am ET, primarily affected major cities including Houston, Atlanta, and Chicago. AT&T, with over 240 million subscribers, holds the position of the largest carrier in the country.
In response to the situation, AT&T and Cricket released a joint statement acknowledging the service interruptions faced by some of their customers. They assured that their network teams promptly took action, resulting in the restoration of three-quarters of their network. The statement emphasized their commitment to swiftly restoring service to the remaining affected customers.
Other Carriers Impacted
While AT&T faced the most significant outage, other carriers were also affected, albeit to a lesser extent. Cricket Wireless, owned by AT&T, reported over 9,000 outages. Verizon experienced more than 2,000 outages, while T-Mobile had over 1,400 reported incidents. Boost Mobile also encountered approximately 700 outages.
In response to the reports, Verizon stated that its network was operating normally and that some customers experienced issues when attempting to call or text users served by other carriers. The company reassured that they were closely monitoring the situation.
T-Mobile, on the other hand, denied experiencing an outage. They clarified that their network was functioning normally and suggested that the reported issues on Downdetector might reflect challenges faced by their customers in connecting to users on other networks.
Possible Causes and Workarounds
The exact cause of the widespread outages remains unknown. However, Lee McKnight, an associate professor at Syracuse University's iSchool, suggests that a cloud misconfiguration or human error is the most likely explanation. McKnight also acknowledged the possibility, though less likely, of an intentional malicious hack targeting AT&T's network. However, the dispersed pattern of outages across the country points towards a more fundamental issue.
For individuals still affected by the outage, Alexander Wyglinski, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, offers a potential workaround. He suggests that many cell phones support Wi-Fi calling, which can serve as a backup solution. By connecting to a nearby Wi-Fi access point, users may be able to make calls and send messages despite the network outage.
The cellular outages experienced by major carriers in the United States have caused significant inconvenience to millions of customers. While AT&T appears to be the most severely affected, other carriers have also reported outages. The exact cause of the disruptions remains under investigation, and carriers are working to restore service as quickly as possible. In the meantime, affected users can explore alternative solutions, such as Wi-Fi calling, to stay connected.
