Assad Ousted: Multiple Visuals From Ground Zero Emerge, Clip Of Evacuation At Damascus Airport Out | WATCH

Videos circulating online captured insurgents breaching the Syrian presidential complex, as Islamist-led rebels claimed to have seized Damascus during a rapid offensive on Sunday.

This swift campaign reignited the prolonged conflict that began in 2011, following President Bashar al-Assad's harsh crackdown on anti-government protests but had largely stagnated in recent years.

Reports indicated that Damascus International Airport was evacuated, with flights suspended as rebel forces stormed the capital. Footage shared online depicted passengers fleeing the airport amidst the chaos.

The Observatory reported that security forces had withdrawn from the airport after Assad purportedly fled the country. However, OneIndia stated it could not independently verify these videos.

Celebrations erupted across Damascus, with residents cheering the departure of Assad and the rebels declaring the city "free."

Videos showed rebels defacing a toppled statue of Hafez al-Assad, the late father of Bashar, who had ruled Syria with an iron grip from 1971 until his death in 2000.

Collapse of Assad's Regime
State television broadcasted an announcement declaring Assad's ousting and the release of all detainees from prison.

The fall of the Syrian government marked the conclusion of five decades of Baathist rule, ending a dynasty that began under Hafez al-Assad. The regime's collapse followed a ten-day rebel offensive that swept through government-controlled territories to reach Damascus.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the faction leading the offensive, reportedly entered Damascus on Saturday evening after capturing Homs, a pivotal city about 160 kilometres from the capital. Other rebel groups took control of regions near the Turkish border and the south. The head of an opposition war monitor stated that Assad had fled to an undisclosed location.

Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali expressed the government's readiness to "extend its hand" to the opposition and facilitate a transition of power to a provisional authority.

The rebel factions announced the victory on Telegram, proclaiming, "After 50 years of oppression under Baath rule, and 13 years of crimes and tyranny and (forced) displacement... we announce today the end of this dark period and the start of a new era for Syria."
