As Ukraine War Escalates, Russia Lists US Missile Base In Poland As Priority Target
Russia has declared that the newly established US missile defence base in northern Poland is now a "priority target for potential elimination." This facility, situated in Redzikowo near the Baltic coast, is part of NATO's missile defence strategy. It was officially inaugurated on November 13.
NATO maintains that the Redzikowo base, along with another in Romania, serves a defensive purpose. On Wednesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that the base "significantly enhances our ability to defend against the growing threat of ballistic missiles from outside the Euro-Atlantic area."

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its concerns on X, stating that the US missile defence base in Poland poses known threats. The ministry emphasised that these Western military installations are considered in their strategic calculations. Despite NATO's assurances, Moscow continues to view these bases as provocative.
Poland's Position
Poland's foreign ministry spokesperson Pawel Wronski clarified on Thursday that no nuclear missiles are stationed at the Redzikowo base. He stressed that it is intended solely for defensive purposes. Wronski remarked, "It is a base that serves the purpose of defence, not attack." He added that such threats from Russia might lead to strengthening Poland's and NATO's air defences.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticised the new base as an expansion of US military infrastructure towards Russia's borders. This development comes amid heightened tensions due to ongoing conflicts involving Ukraine and Russia since 2022.
Currently, over 10,000 US troops are stationed in Poland. The country has been a steadfast ally of Ukraine during its conflict with Russia. The Redzikowo facility forms part of NATO's "Aegis Ashore" system designed to intercept short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
As geopolitical tensions rise, both sides continue to assert their positions regarding military installations and their implications for regional security.
