Armed Militants in Dagestan Assault Churches and Police, Resulting in Multiple Deaths
In a series of coordinated attacks that shook the southern republic of Dagestan in Russia, armed militants targeted two Orthodox churches, a synagogue, and a traffic police post, resulting in the tragic loss of a priest and six police officers. The incidents, which occurred on Sunday, were confirmed by the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti and have been labeled as "terrorist" attacks by Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs in Dagestan reported that the assailants opened fire at religious sites in Derbent, a city by the Caspian Sea, before fleeing the scene. Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the attackers, with two militants already being "eliminated," according to official statements. In a separate but nearly simultaneous incident, a traffic police post in Makhachkala, the capital city of the predominantly Muslim region, was also attacked. This assault resulted in six policemen dead and 12 others wounded.
Shamil Khadulaev, deputy chairman of Dagestan's public monitoring commission, was cited by RIA Novosti revealing that alongside the priest in Derbent, a church security guard in Makhachkala was also among those killed. The motivations behind these violent acts remain unclear as no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. However, some local officials have pointed fingers towards external influences.
Dagestan lawmaker Abdulkhakim Gadzhiyev took to Telegram to express his conviction that these attacks were connected to the intelligence services of Ukraine and NATO countries. This allegation has yet to see an immediate response from Ukrainian officials. Meanwhile, Chechnya's President Ramzan Kadyrov commented on the events as "a vile provocation" aimed at stirring discord among different religious communities.
The attacks have not only resulted in loss of life but have also raised concerns about security and interfaith harmony in the region. As investigations continue and authorities search for those responsible, the community mourns the victims of this senseless violence. The implications of these attacks on Dagestan's societal fabric and its relations with neighboring regions remain to be seen.
