Jaishankar Warns at UN: Connectivity Projects Threaten Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the UN General Assembly, highlighting concerns about unsustainable projects that increase debt and affect sovereignty. He implied criticism of China's initiatives, stating that such projects gain strategic importance when not collaborative. "We are gathered here at a difficult time. The world is yet to recover from the ravages of the Covid pandemic. A war in Ukraine is well into its third year. The conflict in Gaza is acquiring wider ramifications," Jaishankar said.

Jaishankar pointed out that development plans in the Global South have been derailed, with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) becoming increasingly elusive. He noted that unfair trade practices threaten employment and that unviable projects exacerbate debt issues. "Any connectivity that clouds sovereignty and territorial integrity acquires strategic connotations, especially when it is not a shared endeavour," he remarked, alluding to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Global Challenges and Technological Concerns
The minister expressed concerns over technological advancements, which, despite being sources of hope, now also cause anxiety. He highlighted how climate events are becoming more intense and frequent, while food security remains as troubling as health security. "In truth, the world stands fractious, polarised and frustrated. Conversations have become difficult, agreements even more so. This is surely not what the founders of the United Nations would have wanted of us," he stated.
Jaishankar emphasised that both peace and prosperity face threats today due to eroded trust and broken processes. He criticised countries for taking more from the international system than they contribute, thereby weakening it. "Countries have extracted more from the international system than they have put into it, enfeebling it in the process," he said.
The minister's address underscored the urgency of addressing these global issues collaboratively to restore stability and progress. By highlighting these challenges, Jaishankar called for renewed efforts towards cooperation and shared responsibility among nations.
