Amnesty International Accuses Israel of Genocide in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict

Amnesty International has accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, claiming deliberate destruction of Palestinian lives through attacks and infrastructure demolition. The report criticises the prevention of aid delivery, stating these actions cannot be justified by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel. Amnesty urges the US and other allies to stop arms shipments to Israel, suggesting their complicity in genocide.

Israel Faces Genocide Allegations from Amnesty International

Israel strongly denies these allegations, labelling them as antisemitic and false. It argues that its military actions are self-defence against Hamas, which it accuses of committing a genocidal massacre. Israel is contesting these claims at the International Court of Justice and has rejected accusations from the International Criminal Court regarding war crimes.

Amnesty's Allegations and International Reactions

Amnesty's report adds to growing accusations against Israel, likening the situation to historic conflicts in Cambodia, Sudan, and Rwanda. Pope Francis and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince have also called for investigations into potential genocide. Despite this, key allies like the US and Germany reject these allegations, supporting Israel's stance that it targets Hamas, not civilians.

The US has dismissed Amnesty's claims as "unfounded," though it acknowledges the importance of human rights groups in addressing conflict consequences. It encourages Israel to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Meanwhile, Amnesty International Israel disputes the genocide claim, highlighting internal disagreements within the organisation.

Humanitarian Concerns and Military Actions

Amnesty accuses Israel of violating the 1951 Genocide Convention by causing "a slow, calculated death" for Palestinians in Gaza. The report examines Israeli conduct from October 7, 2023, to early July, noting no casualty threshold is needed to prove genocide under UN definitions. Amnesty reviewed over 100 statements from Israeli officials allegedly dehumanising Palestinians.

Israel maintains it protects civilians by warning them before strikes and facilitating aid deliveries. However, the UN and aid groups contest this claim, citing restricted movement and dangerous conditions for aid distribution. A former Israeli general accused the government of ethnic cleansing in northern Gaza due to severe restrictions on humanitarian aid.

Impact on Civilians and Infrastructure

Amnesty reports deliberate destruction of homes, farms, hospitals, and water facilities in Gaza. It analysed 15 airstrikes killing at least 334 civilians without evidence of targeting military objectives. One strike in Rafah killed three generations of a family while they slept. The conflict has displaced 90% of Gaza's population, with many living in dire conditions.

Israel blames civilian casualties on Hamas using residential areas for militant activities. It accuses UN agencies of failing to deliver allowed aid due to safety concerns. The war began with a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in significant casualties and hostages taken into Gaza.

International Pressure and Humanitarian Aid

The US has pressured Israel to allow more aid into Gaza but with limited success. The Biden administration acknowledged possible violations of international law by Israel using US-supplied weapons but cited incomplete evidence. Amnesty calls on countries like the US and Germany to push for an end to the conflict by pressuring Israeli leadership.

The ongoing conflict has caused immense destruction in Gaza since World War II. Aid organisations warn of disease and malnutrition risks as winter approaches. Northern Gaza faces potential famine due to Israeli military operations sealing off the area since early October.
