Amid The Russia-Ukraine War, What Putin's 'Upcoming' India Visit Means
Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India 'soon'. He has recently engaged in meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BRICS Summit in Kazan and the India-Russia Annual Summit held earlier this year. Discussions are expected to deepen the "special and privileged strategic partnership" between the two countries, addressing the needs of trade, defence, energy and geopolitics. This partnership is deeply ingrained in India's foreign policy. India and Russia share an old alliance that dates back to the Cold War period.
Today, Russia remains one of the most reliable defence and energy resource providers. Annual trade between the two countries has skyrocketed, crossing the $45 billion mark in 2024, as India imports massive amounts of crude oil and fertilisers alongside exporting pharmaceuticals and agricultural products. Developing diversified trade and mechanisms to circumvent sanctions against Russia may be at the heart of the discussions when Putin pays a visit. This clearly demonstrates India's strategic autonomy in its stance on the Russia-Ukraine war.

India has not criticised Russia while at the same time calling for dialogue and diplomacy with Ukraine, talking of the need to respect territorial integrity. This nuanced stance would help India maintain close ties with Russia without alienating its Western partners. In return, Russia has always backed India's international ambitions, especially its quest for a seat at the UN Security Council as a permanent member. Russian officials have time and again stated that the inclusion of India is essential for a more representative and equitable world order. This bond is also observed in defence partnerships, such as the S-400 missile system procurement that enhances India's strategic capacity beyond external compulsions.
At the same time, Russia's support on multilateral platforms like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation ensures India's voices grow louder in international arenas. On the economic front, Russian energy supplies enhance India's efforts to make itself a haven for cheap resources for its constantly booming economy, while Indian pharmaceutical exports are a crucial source for the Russia market.
Putin's visit comes at a time of shifting global alliances, making the reaffirmation of India-Russia ties crucial. The partnership highlights India's strategic diplomacy, balancing relations with major powers like the U.S., China and Russia. For India, this relationship not only enhances its defence and economic capacities but also solidifies its position as a key player on the global stage.
