American Travis Timmerman Rescued from Syrian Prison and Flown Out by US Military

An American citizen, Travis Timmerman, was recently evacuated from Syria by the US military. He had been missing for seven months after being detained in the infamous prison system of former President Bashar Assad. A US official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that Timmerman was flown out on a military helicopter following his release by rebels.

Travis Timmerman Rescued from Syrian Prison

Travis Timmerman, aged 29, hails from Urbana, Missouri, located approximately 80 km north of Springfield. He graduated with a finance degree from Missouri State University in 2017. His journey to Syria began as part of a Christian pilgrimage from a mountain near Zahle in eastern Lebanon in June.

Details of Detention and Release

During his detention at the Palestine Branch, a facility run by Syrian intelligence, Timmerman reported having basic amenities like a mattress and containers for drinking and waste. He noted that the Friday calls to prayer helped him keep track of time. Despite the circumstances, he stated he was not mistreated while imprisoned.

Timmerman was released on a Monday morning alongside a young Syrian man and 70 female prisoners, some accompanied by their children. This occurred after rebels took control of Damascus and ousted Assad in a significant political shift. He described his release as being freed by "the liberators who came into the prison and knocked the door down of his cell with a hammer."

Uncertain Future Plans

After his rescue, Timmerman expressed gratitude to those who freed him but indicated to American officials his desire to remain in the region. The specifics of his next destination remain uncertain. Another individual familiar with the situation shared this information but was not authorised to speak publicly.

While detained, Timmerman was kept separate from Syrian and other Arab prisoners. He mentioned having no knowledge of any other Americans held at the same facility. His experience highlights the complexities faced by individuals caught in conflict zones.

The dramatic events leading to Timmerman's release underscore ongoing tensions in Syria. The situation remains fluid as various factions vie for control amidst international involvement.
