American Girl, 4, Held Hostage by Hamas, Freed in Israel-Hamas Cease-Fire

Abigail Edan, a 4-year-old American girl held hostage by Hamas after her parents were killed, was released as part of the cease-fire deal in the Israel-Hamas war.

President Joe Biden has confirmed the release of Abigail Edan, a 4-year-old American girl who was held hostage by Hamas after her parents were killed in the recent Israel-Hamas war. Abigail's release was part of the cease-fire deal reached between Israel and Hamas.

Abigail's Release Marks a Positive Step

President Biden expressed his relief and joy upon hearing the news of Abigail's release. He stated, "Thank God she's home. I wish I were there to hold her." Abigail is the first American hostage to be released under the terms of the cease-fire agreement.

Although President Biden did not have immediate information on Abigail's condition, the White House later confirmed that he had spoken to her family members in the United States and Israel. He also had a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Recap of the Tragic Events

On October 7, Hamas militants stormed Abigail's kibbutz, Kfar Azza, and killed her parents. Abigail sought shelter in a neighbor's home, where the Brodutch family took her in. However, the family, including Abigail, was later confirmed to be among the captives taken to Gaza during the attack that sparked the war.

Abigail spent her birthday in captivity, and the first group of hostages, including Judith and Natalie Raanan, an American woman and her teenage daughter, were released on October 17. Their release was seen as a successful test case for negotiating the larger deal.

The Release Process

Along with Abigail, the Brodutch family, ranging in age from 4 to 84, was also released on Sunday. Red Cross representatives facilitated the transfer of the hostages out of Gaza. Some were handed over directly to Israel, while others left through Egypt. One hostage was airlifted to a hospital.

President Biden acknowledged the ordeal that the hostages had endured and expressed his hope for their healing journey. He described the negotiations as a challenging process that required day-by-day and hour-by-hour efforts. Biden emphasized his commitment to continue working until all hostages are freed.

The Cease-Fire Agreement and Ongoing Negotiations

The cease-fire agreement, which went into effect on Sunday, has brought lifesaving results, according to President Biden. As part of the deal, Israel was to release 39 Palestinian prisoners later that day. A fourth exchange is expected on Monday, the last day of the cease-fire, during which a total of 50 hostages and 150 Palestinian prisoners are to be freed. All of the hostages and prisoners are women and minors.

Jake Sullivan, Biden's national security adviser, had previously stated that nine US citizens and one lawful permanent resident were being held hostage, including women, children, and men. The president expressed hope for the release of the remaining hostages, stating, "We will not stop working until every hostage is returned to their loved ones."

International mediators, led by representatives from the United States and Qatar, are working to extend the cease-fire. President Biden, who has been in regular contact with Prime Minister Netanyahu, planned to speak with him again later on Sunday.

Humanitarian Aid and Future Prospects

In addition to the release of hostages, the cease-fire agreement has allowed for the delivery of critically needed aid into Gaza. President Biden emphasized the importance of extending the pause beyond Monday to continue securing the release of more hostages and providing humanitarian relief to those in need.

The war between Israel and Hamas has claimed the lives of over 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians killed by Hamas in the initial attack. According to the Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza, more than 13,300 Palestinians have been killed, with a significant proportion being women and minors.

The release of Abigail Edan and other hostages marks a positive step towards peace and stability in the region. President Biden's commitment to securing the release of all hostages and extending the cease-fire offers hope for further progress in resolving the conflict.
