American Airlines Jet Collision with Army Helicopter Leaves 64 Feared Dead in Potomac River Incident

An American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter collided near Washington, resulting in a feared loss of all 64 people aboard the plane. Officials reported that at least 28 bodies were recovered from the Potomac River after the helicopter flew into the jet's path during its landing approach at Ronald Reagan National Airport. The aircraft carried 60 passengers and four crew members, while three soldiers were on the helicopter.

Investigation and Initial Findings

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision, which occurred under clear flight conditions as the jet arrived from Wichita, Kansas. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that both aircraft were following standard flight patterns and communication protocols. "We have early indicators of what happened here," Duffy mentioned, though he refrained from providing further details until the investigation progresses.

The crash is potentially the deadliest US aviation disaster since November 2001. If confirmed, it would surpass a 2009 crash near Buffalo, New York, where 50 people died. The last major fatal crash involving a US commercial airline was in 2009 when a Bombardier DHC-8 crashed near Buffalo, New York. That accident resulted in 50 fatalities, including one person on the ground.

Victims and Community Impact

Among those on board were US and Russian figure skaters returning from a development camp following the US Figure Skating Championships. The Kremlin identified two coaches as Russian skaters Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov. "We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy," stated US Figure Skating. Doug Zeghibe of The Skating Club of Boston expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting its impact on the skating community.

President Donald Trump addressed the nation with a moment of silence for the victims but also criticised federal aviation policies without evidence. He blamed air traffic controllers and Democratic policies for declining standards, despite acknowledging that the crash's cause remains unknown.

Details of the Collision

The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. EST in highly monitored airspace near Washington's landmarks. American Airlines Flight 5342 was descending at about 400 feet when it rapidly lost altitude over the Potomac River. Air traffic controllers had cleared it to land on Runway 33 shortly before the collision with a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from Fort Belvoir.

Images from the scene showed boats surrounding wreckage in the river, with parts of the plane submerged. Inside Reagan National Airport, passengers awaited resumed flights amid a sombre atmosphere. Aster Andemicael, at the airport with her father, shared her emotional response to witnessing a frantic search for loved ones after the crash.

The FAA confirmed that moments before impact, air traffic controllers instructed the helicopter to pass behind the jet. However, seconds later, both aircraft collided over the river. Video footage captured two sets of lights merging into a fireball.

The tragic event has left many grieving and searching for answers as investigations continue to uncover what led to this devastating collision.
