Amazon and Starbucks Workers Strike for Union Recognition and Labour Contracts in Major U.S. Cities
Amazon delivery drivers and Starbucks baristas have initiated strikes in several U.S. cities. They aim to pressure these companies to recognise them as unionised employees or agree to a first labour contract. These strikes, which began on Thursday and Friday, follow recent confrontations between large corporations and organised labour. Established unions have secured significant concessions from employers this year, including Boeing factory workers and Las Vegas hotel staff.

Starbucks and Amazon workers are still striving for their initial contracts. Amazon has refused to acknowledge the unionisation efforts of its drivers and warehouse workers, many of whom have voted to unionise. The Teamsters union claims representation of these workers. Starbucks has long resisted unionisation but agreed to negotiate a contract by year-end.
Union Efforts Amidst Economic Activity
Strikes during high economic activity periods, like holidays, can help unions gain leverage in negotiations. Both Amazon and Starbucks saw increased organising efforts after the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted economic inequality among front-line workers. Employees at various companies, including Apple and Trader Joe's, have successfully organised unions.
However, converting these victories into contracts remains challenging. Workers at Amazon and Starbucks have yet to secure agreements with these Seattle-based giants. John Logan from San Francisco State University believes these workers are eager to progress before President-elect Donald Trump appoints a Republican majority to the National Labor Relations Board.
Teamsters' Role in Amazon Strikes
The Teamsters report that Amazon workers are striking at seven delivery stations across Southern California, San Francisco, New York City, Atlanta, and Skokie, Illinois. This action follows Amazon's failure to meet a Sunday deadline for contract negotiations set by the union. The Teamsters are advocating for better wages, benefits, and safer conditions for Amazon employees.
The union focuses on organising delivery drivers, whom Amazon claims are not its employees since they work for contractors handling deliveries. This arrangement provides Amazon some protection against unionisation attempts in the transportation industry dominated by the Teamsters.
Starbucks Contract Negotiations
Unlike Amazon, Starbucks has been engaged in contract negotiations. However, Starbucks Workers United claims the company hasn't honoured its February commitment to finalise a labour agreement this year. The union also seeks resolution of numerous unfair labour practice charges filed with the National Labor Relations Board.
The strikes that began on Friday in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Seattle were expanded by Workers United on Saturday to include stores in Denver, Pittsburgh, and Columbus, Ohio. The union criticised Starbucks' proposed economic package for lacking immediate wage increases for unionised baristas.
Political Implications and Future Prospects
Trump's potential second term could impact labour relations differently than his first term. He recently appointed Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer as the Department of Labor head in his new administration. This appointment could signal a more labour-friendly approach as she has strong union support.
Patricia Campos-Medina from Cornell University's Worker Institute anticipates increased union activity before Trump's office tenure begins. She believes Trump's actions will reveal his commitments to the working class.
The ongoing strikes reflect broader tensions between major corporations and their workforce over fair wages and working conditions. As negotiations continue, both sides remain firm in their positions while seeking resolutions that address their respective concerns.
