Amazon Elevates Its Stake in AI with a $2.75 Billion Investment in Anthropic
New York, Mar 27 AP - In a significant move underscoring its commitment to the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence (AI), Amazon announced on Wednesday an additional investment of USD 2.75 billion into Anthropic, a San Francisco-based AI startup. This latest infusion of funds brings Amazon's total investment in Anthropic to an impressive USD 4 billion, maintaining its minority stake in the company that stands as a competitor to OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.

Swami Sivasubramanian, the vice president of data and AI at AWS, Amazon's cloud computing arm, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership. "Generative AI is poised to be the most transformational technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further improve our customers' experiences," he stated. This collaboration aims to develop foundation models that are critical to the generative AI systems captivating interest worldwide.
As part of the agreement, Anthropic will prioritize AWS as its main cloud provider and will utilize Amazon's custom chips for building, training, and deploying AI models. Additionally, this partnership will grant AWS customers, primarily businesses, access to these advanced models through an Amazon service named Bedrock. Notably, companies such as Delta Air Lines and Siemens are already leveraging Bedrock to integrate Anthropics' AI models into their operations.
This investment is a testament to the increasing interest and financial commitment by major technology firms in AI startups. It reflects a broader industry trend where artificial intelligence is seen as a pivotal area of growth and innovation. Earlier this year, US antitrust regulators announced they were examining these types of investments, highlighting the growing scrutiny in the sector.
Amazon's initial investment of USD 1.25 billion in Anthropic back in September laid the groundwork for this expanded partnership. The tech giant had hinted at plans to invest up to USD 4 billion, signaling its deep interest in advancing AI technologies through strategic collaborations. This move by Amazon not only underscores its ambition in the AI space but also highlights the potential of generative AI technologies to transform customer experiences across various industries.
