Algiers Unveils Majestic Great Mosque: A Beacon of Faith and Unity
Algiers unveils the magnificent Great Mosque, showcasing Algerias resilience and religious devotion. With the worlds tallest minaret and a capacity for 120,000 worshippers, it stands as a symbol of unity and cultural heritage.
In a significant development, Algeria has inaugurated the colossal "Great Mosque of Algiers" on its Mediterranean coastline, marking the culmination of a project that has undergone years of political upheaval and transformation. Initially envisioned as a symbol of state-sponsored strength and religiosity, the mosque's journey has been marked by delays and cost overruns, attracting both admiration and criticism.

A Monumental Structure
Constructed by a Chinese construction firm throughout the 2010s, the "Great Mosque of Algiers" stands as a testament to architectural grandeur. It boasts the world's tallest minaret, soaring at an impressive 869 feet (265 meters), making it a prominent landmark visible from afar. As the third largest mosque in the world and the largest outside Islam's holiest cities, its prayer room has the capacity to accommodate a staggering 120,000 worshippers.
The mosque's modernist design incorporates Arab and North African flourishes, paying homage to Algerian tradition and culture. It also features a helicopter landing pad and a vast library capable of housing up to 1 million books, reflecting the mosque's commitment to both spiritual and intellectual pursuits.
Promoting Moderate Islam
The inauguration of the mosque is seen as a significant step in Algeria's efforts to propagate a moderate brand of Islam. Ali Mohamed Salabi, the General Secretary of the World Union of Muslim Ulemas, expressed hope that the mosque would guide Muslims "toward goodness and moderation." This focus on moderation stems from Algeria's experience with an Islamist-led rebellion in the 1990s, which resulted in a bloody civil war.
Delayed Inauguration
Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune officially inaugurated the mosque on Sunday in Algiers, fulfilling his promise to open it with great pomp and circumstance. However, the event was largely ceremonial, as the mosque has already been open to international tourists and state visitors to Algeria for approximately five years. An earlier ceremony had been delayed due to various factors.
The timing of the official opening coincides with the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan, allowing the mosque to host nightly prayers during this significant period.
Controversy and Criticism
Beyond its impressive dimensions, the mosque has garnered attention for the delays and controversies that characterized its seven-year construction period. Concerns were raised about the choice of the construction site, with experts warning of potential seismic risks. The state denied these claims in a news release posted on the state news agency website, APS.
Throughout the delays and cost overruns, the project faced criticism from Algerians, many of whom expressed the sentiment that they would have preferred the construction of four hospitals instead of the mosque. The project's official cost amounted to a substantial USD 898 million.
Bouteflika's Legacy
The mosque was initially a project of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who envisioned it as the largest mosque in Africa. He intended for it to be his legacy and even named it the "Abdelaziz Bouteflika Mosque," similar to the Mosque Hassan II in Casablanca, Morocco. However, the protests that swept Algeria in 2019 and led to Bouteflika's resignation after two decades in power prevented him from realizing his plans.
The mosque, along with other major projects such as a national highway and a million new housing units, was marred by suspicions of corruption during the Bouteflika era, with allegations of kickbacks to contractors and state officials.
The inauguration of the "Great Mosque of Algiers" marks a significant milestone in Algeria's history, blending architectural grandeur with socio-political complexities. While it stands as a symbol of religious devotion and cultural heritage, the mosque's journey has been marked by challenges, controversies, and debates. As Algeria moves forward, the mosque serves as a reminder of the nation's aspirations, its struggles, and its ongoing pursuit of progress and unity.
