Algerias President Tebboune Dismisses Prime Minister Ahead of Elections

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has dismissed Prime Minister Aimene Benabderahmne and replaced him with Mohamed Labaoui, his cabinet head, amid economic struggles and upcoming national elections.

Algiers, Algeria - Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune dismissed Prime Minister Aimene Benabderahmne on Saturday and replaced him with Mohamed Labaoui, a 73-year-old lawyer and ally of Tebboune who has served as the president's cabinet head since March, according to the state news agency.

Political Upheaval in North Africa

Algeria

Benabderahmne's dismissal marks the latest upheaval in North African politics, following the dismissal of Tunisia's prime minister in August and the recent removal of the head of Algeria's state-run oil company and eight of his vice presidents.

Economic Challenges and Presidential Elections

The change in leadership comes at a time of economic anxiety in Algeria, with inflation and the rising cost of basic goods, including food and medicine, posing significant challenges. Tebboune, who will seek re-election in December 2024, faces the task of leading Africa's largest nation, with a population of 44 million and vast natural resources, including oil and gas reserves.

Algeria's Dependence on Oil and Gas

Throughout Tebboune's first term, Algeria has heavily relied on oil and gas revenues to support its budget. However, the country has also benefited from Europe's efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian natural gas, providing Algeria with an opportunity to increase its energy exports.

Response to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Algeria has expressed strong support for the Palestinians in their conflict with Israel, referring to the situation as a "Zionist colonial occupation." While the government has imposed restrictions on some street protests, including those organized by Islamists opposed to the government, it has faced criticism for its crackdown on pro-democracy groups, activists, and journalists.

Tebboune's Rise to Power

Tebboune came to power in 2019 following the Hirak movement, which led to the removal of longtime President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Tebboune initially promised to address corruption and revitalize the economy but has faced backlash from young people who feel that his leadership has not adequately addressed their concerns. Despite releasing imprisoned protesters, Tebboune's government has continued to crack down on dissent.

Mohamed Labaoui: The Incoming Prime Minister

Mohamed Labaoui, the incoming prime minister, has a background as an athlete on Algeria's national handball team and has served as a diplomat, including as Algeria's ambassador to Egypt and the United Nations.

As Tebboune tours the country ahead of the 2024 presidential elections, he faces the challenge of addressing economic concerns and appeasing the frustrations of young people who were at the forefront of the Hirak movement. The appointment of Mohamed Labaoui as prime minister signals a shift in leadership and will be closely watched by Algerians hoping for change.
