Alexander Stubb Elected President of Finland in Close Race
Alexander Stubb, former Prime Minister of Finland, has emerged victorious in the countrys presidential election runoff, defeating Pekka Haavisto. With 51.6% of the votes, Stubb secured the presidency and will become Finlands 13th president since its independence from Russia.
In a close race, former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb defeated ex-Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto in Finland's presidential runoff election on Sunday. Stubb's victory marks a significant moment for the Nordic country as it navigates its foreign and security policies as a new member of NATO amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Stubb Secures Victory
With all votes counted, Stubb, representing the National Coalition Party, secured 51.6% of the votes, while Haavisto, an independent candidate from the green left, garnered 48.4%. The 55-year-old Stubb, who previously served as prime minister from 2014 to 2015 and began his political career as a lawmaker in the European Parliament, is set to become Finland's 13th president since its independence from the Russian Empire in 1917.
Haavisto Concedes Defeat
Haavisto graciously conceded defeat after projections by the Finnish public broadcaster YLE indicated Stubb's victory on Sunday night. He congratulated Stubb during a gathering at Helsinki City Hall, where candidates and media representatives awaited the election results.
A Respectful Campaign
The months-long election campaign was characterized by civility and a lack of confrontational rhetoric, reflecting the consensus-driven nature of Finnish politics. Stubb acknowledged this respectful tone in his address to Haavisto, expressing pride in running alongside him and thanking him for a fair and honorable race.
Finland's Presidential Role
Stubb and Haavisto, both 65 years old, were the frontrunners in the election, which saw over four million eligible voters choosing a successor to the highly popular President Sauli Niinistö, whose second six-year term concludes in March. The runoff election was necessary as none of the nine original candidates secured a majority in the first round held on January 28. Stubb emerged as the top contender with 27.3% of the votes, followed closely by Haavisto with 25.8%.
Stubb's Foreign Policy Priorities
Stubb, who has held various ministerial positions, including foreign affairs, finance, and European affairs, was widely favored to win the presidency. Several polls indicated his strong support among voters. Initial voter turnout was recorded at 70.7%, slightly lower than the 75% turnout in the first round.
In Finland, the president plays a significant role in shaping foreign and security policies in collaboration with the government. This responsibility is particularly crucial in the current geopolitical climate, especially concerning relations with countries outside the European Union, such as the United States, Russia, and China.
Alignment on Foreign Policy
During the election campaign, Stubb and Haavisto largely shared similar views on Finland's foreign policy and security priorities. Both candidates emphasized the importance of maintaining a firm stance against Russia and its current leadership, strengthening security ties with the United States, and providing military and civilian support to Ukraine. Finland shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, making these issues of utmost importance.
Head of State and Commander-in-Chief
The Finnish president also serves as the commander-in-chief of the military, a role that has become increasingly significant in light of Europe's current security environment and Finland's recent accession to NATO in April 2023, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine the previous year.
International Congratulations
Among the first foreign dignitaries to congratulate Stubb on his victory was Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy expressed his appreciation for Stubb's unwavering support for Ukraine and highlighted the shared commitment to strengthening the security of Europe and each nation on the continent. He looked forward to advancing relations and working towards a vision of a free, united, and well-defended Europe.
Presidential Role and Domestic Politics
The Finnish president is expected to remain above the fray of day-to-day politics and largely refrain from interfering in domestic political disputes. Haavisto, who previously served as Finland's top diplomat from 2019 to 2023 and played a key role in the country's NATO accession negotiations, was making his third bid for the presidency. He is also a former conflict mediator with the United Nations and a passionate environmentalist.
