UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute, describing Salmond as a "monumental figure of both Scottish and British politics." Starmer added, "He leaves behind a lasting legacy. As first minister of Scotland, he cared deeply about Scotland's heritage, history and culture, as well as the communities he represented."

Political Journey and Legacy

Salmond served as Scotland's first minister from 2007 to 2014. He led the Scottish National Party (SNP) twice, from 1990 to 2000 and again from 2004 to 2014. Under his leadership, the SNP became a significant force in Scottish politics.

In 2014, Salmond spearheaded the campaign for Scottish independence during the referendum. Although the campaign did not succeed, it garnered 45% of the vote. This effort marked a pivotal moment in Scotland's political landscape.

Tributes from Political Leaders

John Swinney, the current SNP first minister, expressed his shock and sadness at Salmond's sudden passing. "Over many years, Alex made an enormous contribution to political life, not just within Scotland, but across the U.K. and beyond," Swinney stated. "He took the Scottish National Party from the fringes of Scottish politics into government and led Scotland so close to becoming an independent country."

Former UK Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also acknowledged Salmond's impact. "While I disagreed with him on the constitutional question, there was no denying his skill in debate or his passion for politics," Sunak remarked on X. "May he rest in peace."

Later Years and New Endeavours

Salmond resigned from the SNP in 2018 following allegations of sexual harassment. He then established a new political party called Alba. Despite controversies, his influence on Scottish politics remained significant.

Salmond's contributions have left an indelible mark on both Scottish and British political landscapes. His efforts towards independence continue to inspire discussions about Scotland's future.
