Alabama Man Charged with Capital Murder in July Quadruple Homicide After September Shootings

A man from Alabama, Damien McDaniel, 22, faces capital murder charges for two separate quadruple homicides. The first incident occurred in July outside a Birmingham nightclub, resulting in four deaths and ten injuries. Officer Truman Fitzgerald shared this update during a press conference. McDaniel is also linked to three other fatal shootings in August and September.

New Charges for Alabama Man in Homicide Case

Another individual, Hatarius Woods, 27, has been charged alongside McDaniel for the July shooting. Fitzgerald highlighted that these suspects are responsible for about 30% of Birmingham's homicides between July and September. "These individuals started back in July, and they did not stop from September," Fitzgerald stated. Efforts to reach attorneys for both men have been unsuccessful.

Gun Violence Concerns

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin addressed the city's gun violence issue in a video released Tuesday night. He sat before 145 guns, representing the number of homicides this year. Woodfin urged state legislators to assist in tackling the widespread gun violence affecting Birmingham.

Woodfin expressed his support for the Second Amendment but advocated for more local control over gun permitting laws. "Even if I give you more officers on our streets, people are still legally allowed to drive around with these types of guns," he said, pointing to the firearms displayed.

Ongoing Investigations

The September 21 mass shooting outside another nightclub is also linked to McDaniel. This incident involved multiple shooters and resulted in four deaths and 17 injuries. Fitzgerald confirmed that investigations into this shooting are still active. It marked Birmingham's third mass shooting of the year.

With the recent fatal shooting on Sunday, Birmingham has surpassed its previous homicide record set in 2022, reaching 145 homicides in 2024. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for effective measures to address the city's escalating violence.

Community Impact

Mayor Woodfin believes Birmingham residents are eager for stricter gun safety laws. "If I was a betting man, I would believe the residents of Birmingham have had enough of this and want to see more gun safety laws in place that protect people in Birmingham," he remarked. However, he noted that such changes require action beyond his authority.

McDaniel now faces accusations of killing 11 people and injuring 29 others across five incidents within two months. The charges announced on Tuesday add to his growing list of alleged crimes, highlighting a pattern of violence that has deeply affected the community.
