Protests Bring Airports to a Standstill: Travellers Forced to Abandon Cars and Walk

New York Protest Blocks Airport Expressway

In New York, activists staged a protest on the expressway leading to John F. Kennedy International Airport, demanding an end to the Israel-Hamas conflict and expanded rights for Palestinians. The demonstration brought traffic to a standstill for approximately 20 minutes, causing inconvenience for travellers.

Videos shared on social media showed passengers, some carrying luggage, abandoning their vehicles and walking over barriers onto the highway median. One woman expressed her frustration, apologizing for the situation but emphasizing the need to get to work.

Authorities responded to the protest by arresting 26 individuals, according to Steve Burns, a spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. To assist affected travellers, the agency provided two buses to transport people caught in the traffic backup to the airport.

Los Angeles Protest Shuts Down Major Thoroughfare

Concurrently with the New York protest, pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Los Angeles blocked a major thoroughfare leading to the Los Angeles International Airport. News helicopter footage captured the group dragging traffic cones, trash bins, scooters, and debris onto the lanes, effectively shutting down the road.

The protesters dispersed upon the arrival of police officers, but the Los Angeles Police Department reported that traffic around the airport remained impacted for approximately two hours after the demonstration was declared unlawful.

The exact number of arrests in Los Angeles was not immediately available. However, the airport was expecting a significant influx of travellers on Wednesday, with an estimated 215,000 passengers and 87,000 vehicles anticipated.

Escalating Protests in Response to Israel-Hamas Conflict

The demonstrations in New York and Los Angeles are part of a series of near-nightly protests that have occurred across the United States since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7. In New York, organizers have responded to the escalating death toll in Gaza by targeting high-profile events, including the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed concerns about the tactics employed by some protest organizers and suggested that the police may need to enhance their response. He emphasized the importance of maintaining order and preventing disruptions to the city's daily functioning.

The ongoing protests highlight the deep-rooted tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict and the complexities of managing public demonstrations in major cities.
