AirAsia: Divers retrieve one black box, hunt for cockpit voice recorder
Jakarta, Jan 12: Divers on Monday retrieved one of the black boxes of the AirAsia flight that crashed over two weeks ago in the Java Sea.
Rescue operations have been in place round the clock and the retrival of the black box proves to be a major breakthrough in the incident. The black box was brought to the surface by four divers, officials said.
"I received information from the National Transport Safety Committee chief that at 07:11 am (local time), we have managed to get part of black box or the flight data recorder (FDR)," Bambang Soelistyo, the chief of Indonesia's search and rescue agency Basarnas, told reporters.
Now the hunt is for the cockpit voice recorder, which may further give an insight into the plane crash.
Divers had zeroed in on the sight after they received pings from the black box.
Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501 lost contact with ground control on Dec 28, less than half way into a two-hour flight from Indonesia to Singapore and crashed possibly due to bad weather.
