Denver Air Traffic Controllers Experience Communication Outage During FAA Equipment Failure

Earlier this week, air traffic controllers in Denver experienced a brief communication breakdown with aircraft near the major airport. This incident lasted for 90 seconds and required the use of backup frequencies. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the issue occurred at Denver International Airport on Monday afternoon, affecting only communications, not radar, according to Frank McIntosh, the FAA's head of air traffic control.

Denver Controllers Face Communication Outage

The Denver incident is part of a series of equipment failures affecting air traffic safety. Recently, there were two significant outages involving radar and communications at a facility managing flights in and out of Newark, New Jersey. These incidents have raised concerns about the reliability of the current system.

FAA Equipment Failures Raise Concerns

The FAA reported that the Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center lost communication capabilities for about 90 seconds. During this time, both primary and main backup frequencies failed, forcing controllers to use an emergency frequency to maintain contact with pilots. Despite this, aircraft remained safely separated without operational impacts.

Rep. Robert Garcia from California expressed his concerns during a House hearing. He highlighted that these outages are becoming more frequent and are alarming. Garcia noted longstanding staffing and equipment issues within air traffic control, emphasizing the need for immediate solutions to address these failures.

Impact on Newark Airport Operations

Newark Airport has faced significant disruptions since its first radar outage on April 28, which also lasted about 90 seconds. A second outage occurred on May 9, affecting both radar and communications. These issues have led to Newark leading the nation in flight cancellations and delays.

The FAA is currently holding meetings with airlines operating out of Newark to discuss reducing flights due to insufficient controllers for the current schedule. Over 100 flights were cancelled at Newark on Thursday alone, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the airport.

Efforts to Modernise Air Traffic Control

In response to these challenges, last week saw the announcement of a multibillion-dollar plan by the Trump administration to modernise the air traffic control system. This plan aims to replace outdated equipment that has been in use for decades.

This initiative was partly driven by a tragic midair collision in January between a passenger jet and an Army helicopter over Washington, D.C., which resulted in 67 fatalities. Several other crashes this year have further pressured officials to take action.

The recent communication failure in Denver underscores ongoing issues within the air traffic control system. As efforts continue to address these problems, ensuring passenger safety remains a top priority for aviation authorities.
