After Theft Case, US Embassy Warns Indians: ‘You Could Lose More Than Just Your Freedom’

The US Embassy in India has issued a strong advisory to visa applicants after a video of an Indian woman caught shoplifting in the United States went viral on social media. The embassy's statement serves as a warning about the serious legal and immigration consequences of committing crimes while on US soil.

After Theft Case US Embassy Warns Indians You Could Lose More Than Just Your Freedom

US Embassy Issues Advisory

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the US Embassy wrote,"Committing assault, theft, or burglary in the United States won't just cause you legal issues - it could lead to your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future US visas."

It added that the United States values law and order and expects all foreign visitors to follow US laws without exception.

The advisory comes amid a wave of tightening regulations on US visa processes, especially concerning criminal conduct and applicant background checks.

Shoplifting Incident Goes Viral

The embassy's warning was prompted by a viral video that shows an Indian tourist shoplifting at a Target store during her vacation in the US. The video, posted by independent YouTube channel @BodyCamEdition, shows the woman being confronted by store staff and law enforcement officers.

She allegedly tried to leave the store with merchandise worth $1,000 (approx. ₹1.1 lakh) without paying. In the footage, the woman pleads with officers, saying:

"But if I'm paying for it, what is the harm?"

To this, an officer calmly responds:

"It would have been fine if you didn't leave, right? You would have had that opportunity to pay. But because you left the store at that point, you chose to not pay for it, and we can't go back."

The incident has triggered widespread discussion online, with many calling for stricter awareness campaigns for Indian travelers heading abroad.

The warning is the latest in a series of advisories and policy shifts. Just last month, the US Embassy warned Indian citizens against illegal entry into the country after an Indian student was detained at a US airport and later deported.

Additionally, the US federal government has now introduced stricter social media vetting for all visa applicants. In a significant change, the embassy has reportedly cancelled in-person visa interviews, replacing them with digital screening of social media profiles to evaluate applicant behavior and intent.

What Visa Applicants Need to Know

Avoid criminal activity like shoplifting, assault, or burglary while in the US.

Visa revocation and future ineligibility are possible consequences of breaking US law.

The US is increasing scrutiny on social media activity of all visa applicants.

Even minor offences can result in serious legal and immigration setbacks.

The US Embassy's message is clear: Respect local laws or face lasting consequences. With stricter rules and heightened scrutiny of Indian travelers, it's more important than ever to be aware, responsible, and law-abiding while abroad.
