After 4 decent years, 2014 has been a nightmare for air travel

Only six years since 1946 have seen less than 600 fatalities and they are 1955, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013. In 2014, the number has already gone past that. Nine years since 1946 has seen less than 800 deaths in air accidents.
The year 2013 was the safest for air travel since World War II. The number of deaths had gone down in four years since 2009 but 2014 saw a turn in the pattern.
757 fatalities have been registered in air crashes till July this year
These numbers although don't convey the right picture for given the increase in volume in air travel through the decades, the standard of air safety can not be judged only on the basis of the death toll. Still, three crashes inside eight days (and we officially know what happened to MH370 in March) is by no means any statistics to make oneself assured about buying an air ticket for the next journey.
