In a tragic incident, gunmen launched an attack on villagers in the oil-rich Abyei region, which is claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but it is suspected to be linked to a land dispute.

Deadly Abyei Attack: 52 Killed, 64 Injured in South Sudans Oil-Rich Region

Land Dispute at the Heart of the Conflict

Abyei has been plagued by deadly ethnic violence, particularly between the Twic Dinka tribe from neighboring Warrap State and the Ngok Dinka from Abyei. The conflict revolves around the Aneet area, located at the border, which is a subject of dispute between the two groups.

The attackers in Saturday's violence were identified as armed youth from the Nuer tribe, who had migrated to Warrap state last year due to flooding in their own areas.

UNISFA Condemns Violence and Confirms Casualties

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) strongly condemned the violence that led to the death of a peacekeeper. UNISFA confirmed that intercommunal clashes occurred in the Nyinkuac, Majbong, and Khadian areas, resulting in casualties and the evacuation of civilians to UNISFA bases.

In a statement, UNISFA revealed that its base in Agok came under attack by an armed group. The mission successfully repelled the attack, but tragically, a Ghanaian peacekeeper lost their life in the process.

Abyei's Contested Status

The Abyei region has been a subject of disagreement between Sudan and South Sudan since the 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war between Sudan's north and south. Both countries claim ownership of Abyei, and its status remains unresolved after South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011.

The majority of the population in Abyei, the Ngok Dinka people, favor South Sudan, while the Misseriya nomads, who come to Abyei for pasture for their cattle, favor Sudan. Currently, the region is under the control of South Sudan.

Escalating Clashes in Abyei

Inter-communal and cross-border clashes have intensified since South Sudan deployed its troops to Abyei in March. The situation in the region remains tense, and the recent attack highlights the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing land dispute and the broader conflict in Abyei.
