Why Abortion Rights Is A Poll Issue For Indian Americans In The US?
The upcoming US presidential election sees abortion rights as a pivotal issue for Indian American women voters. This group, part of the second-largest immigrant community in the US, is leaning towards candidates supporting reproductive rights. Meeta Damani, a documentary filmmaker in New Jersey, highlights the importance of this issue for both men and women in the community.
The 2024 election cycle has seen abortion and reproductive rights become top-tier policy issues among Indian American women. Priya, a marketing professional from New Jersey, expresses disbelief that abortion rights are even debated in a developed country like the US. She emphasises that women will support parties that protect their rights.

Impact of Supreme Court Decision
In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to abortion and allowing states to impose restrictions. This decision led to restrictive laws in several states, sparking widespread disapproval. Many Democratic-led states have since acted to safeguard abortion rights, becoming sanctuaries for those seeking care.
Supreet, an IT professional, notes that women have faced various challenges due to these restrictions. She mentions that many employers are implementing supportive policies for women, even if they operate in states where abortion is illegal. Supreet believes women voters will back pro-abortion parties.
Survey Insights on Voting Preferences
The Indian American Attitudes Survey (IAAS) conducted an online survey between September 18 and October 15. It revealed a significant gender gap in voting preferences among Indian Americans. According to the survey, 67% of Indian American women plan to vote for Kamala Harris, compared to 53% of men.
This gender gap is most pronounced among younger voters. Among those over 40, over 70% of women and 60% of men intend to vote for Harris. Sonal Sharma, an immigration lawyer, cautions that while abortion is crucial for many women, it isn't the sole issue influencing voters.
Political campaigns have recognised the importance of abortion rights for Indian American women. Kamala Harris has made these rights central to her campaign strategy. Reproductive rights advocacy groups are actively engaging with Indian American voters.
In the US, there are over 5.2 million people of Indian origin today. As the second-largest immigrant group in the country, they have become significant political actors. Women form a vital subset of this demographic, and as the election approaches, abortion rights will likely continue to mobilise and influence them.
