A Teenage Girl Gang-Raped In Metaverse; Cops Begin Probe

In a virtual reality game, a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a group of men in the United Kingdom. The British police are investigating the case which is believed to be the first virtual sexual offence case.

According to a report in Daily Mail, the girl has been left disturbed after her avatar (the digital character) was gang-raped by online strangers. The girl was wearing a virtual reality headset in an immersive game when the incident happened. However, it is unclear what game the teenager was playing.

A senior police officer informed the news outlet, "This child experienced psychological trauma similar to that of someone who has been physically raped."

Although, the victim has not suffered from any physical injuries but the case has raised questions about whether police should be using their time and resources to investigate Metaverse crimes.

The current legislation has no laws to deal with such cases as it defines sexual assault as physical, the officer added.

The Meta spokesperson said, "The kind of behaviour described has no place on our platform, which is why for all users we have an automatic protection called personal boundary, which keeps people you don't know a few feet away from you."
