Elderly Ukrainian Woman Walks Miles to Safety Amid Conflict
In a heartwarming tale of resilience and survival amidst the backdrop of conflict, 98-year-old Lidia Stepanivna Lomikovska has been reunited with her family after a harrowing journey through Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine. Lomikovska, who hails from the frontline town of Ocheretyne in the eastern Donetsk region, embarked on this perilous journey last week, navigating nearly 10 kilometers (6 miles) by foot. Her only companions on this journey were a pair of slippers, a cane, and an unwavering determination to reach safety.

The decision to leave Ocheretyne came as Russian troops advanced into the town, intensifying the conflict with artillery, drones, and bombs. The situation grew dire as Kyiv's forces found themselves increasingly depleted of ammunition. Amidst the chaos, Lomikovska became separated from her son and two daughters-in-law, one of whom had been injured by shrapnel just days before. While her younger family members took less direct routes in their attempt to escape, Lomikovska opted to stay on the main road, a decision that would test her limits.
Throughout her journey, Lomikovska faced numerous challenges. She recounted falling twice and having to rest intermittently, even sleeping by the roadside before pressing on. "Once I lost balance and fell into weeds. I fell asleep … a little, and continued walking. And then, for the second time, again, I fell. But then I got up and thought to myself: 'I need to keep walking, bit by bit,'" she shared in a video interview with the National Police of Donetsk region.
Her perseverance paid off when Ukrainian soldiers found her walking along the road in the evening. They entrusted her to the "White Angels," a police group dedicated to evacuating citizens from frontline areas. The group provided her shelter and facilitated a reunion with her relatives.
Lomikovska's story is not just one of survival but also serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring human spirit in times of war. Reflecting on her experiences during World War II, she noted the stark differences between then and now. "I survived that war...I had to go through this war too, and in the end, I am left with nothing. That war wasn't like this one. I saw that war. Not a single house burned down. But now – everything is on fire," she lamented.
In an uplifting development, Oleh Horokhovskyi, chief executive of one of Ukraine's largest banks, announced via his Telegram channel that Monobank would purchase a house for Lomikovska. "Monobank will buy Lydia Stepanivna a house and she will surely live in it until the moment when this abomination disappears from our land," Horokhovskyi stated.
Lomikovska's ordeal underscores the grave realities faced by civilians caught in conflict zones and highlights acts of kindness that emerge in such dire circumstances. Her story is not just about survival; it's about hope, resilience, and the collective effort to support those in need during times of crisis.
