7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Southern Philippine Coast

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck off the southern Philippine coast on Saturday, prompting many villagers to flee their homes in panic around midnight after Philippine authorities issued a tsunami warning.

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck off the southern Philippine coast on Saturday. The quake, which occurred at 10:37 p.m. at a depth of 32 kilometers (20 miles), triggered panic among residents, prompting many to flee their homes.

Tsunami Warning Issued, Later Dropped

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre initially issued a tsunami warning for the southern Philippines and parts of Indonesia, Palau, and Malaysia. However, the warning was later dropped.

Authorities Advise Evacuations

In Japan, authorities issued evacuation orders for various parts of Okinawa Prefecture, including the entire coastal area, affecting thousands of people. In the Philippines, residents along the coast of southern Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces were advised to evacuate to higher ground or move farther inland.

Potential Impact

Based on the quake's magnitude, Teresito Bacolcol, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said a 1-meter (3.2-foot) tsunami may hit, but the wave could be higher in enclosed coves, bays, and straits.

Response and Monitoring

Local authorities and the government's disaster-response agency reported that villagers in Hinatuan town and outlying areas in Surigao del Sur province fled their homes to safety. More than three hours after the quake, there were no reports of a tsunami hitting the coast, but authorities continued monitoring the situation.

The Philippines, located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is frequently affected by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The archipelago also experiences an average of 20 typhoons and storms annually. Despite the risks, the country has implemented disaster preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of such natural hazards.
