2024 US Elections: Why Is Elon Musk Giving Away $1 Million Daily?
With just two weeks left until the U.S. presidential elections, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has made headlines with an unusual offer aimed at encouraging Republicans in Pennsylvania to cast their votes.
Musk, who has openly supported Donald Trump, announced a bold incentive: one registered Republican from the state will win $1 million each day until the election on November 5, provided they sign a petition supporting the right to free speech and the Second Amendment.

The announcement was made on October 19, 2024, and Musk reportedly awarded the first prize to a Pennsylvania resident, John Dreher, through his political action committee (PAC) called America. This PAC, founded by Musk, advocates for Republican candidates and policies focused on border security, responsible spending, public safety, free speech, and self-protection.
Musk's offer is part of a broader strategy to support Trump's re-election campaign. The billionaire, who also owns Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), has gained attention for his increasing political activism, particularly his support for conservative causes.
Musk's Political Evolution: From Moderate to Trump Ally
Musk's political views have undergone a notable shift in recent years. Prior to the pandemic, he described himself as a political moderate. He endorsed Democratic candidates such as Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, and Hillary Clinton in 2016. In fact, Musk had been highly critical of Trump during the 2016 election, suggesting that the then-candidate lacked the necessary character to represent the U.S.
However, the onset of the pandemic marked a significant turning point. Musk became a vocal critic of the government's handling of the COVID-19 crisis, including his opposition to lockdowns and the vaccine. This shift in rhetoric was accompanied by growing discontent with President Joe Biden, whom Musk described as a "damp sock puppet." He also criticized the Biden administration for prioritizing legacy companies over SpaceX and Tesla, both of which are at the forefront of Musk's business empire.
Experts have suggested that Musk's swing to the right has been driven by more than just political disagreements. A personal factor has been his daughter's decision to publicly come out as transgender in 2022, which Musk has said played a role in shaping his current political stance. He has expressed his distress over what he views as the "woke mind virus" that is pervasive in today's cultural debates. Musk even shared with psychologist Jordan Peterson that he felt he had "lost his son" to this societal shift.
Musk's Role in the 2024 Trump Campaign
Despite years of public neutrality, Musk began supporting Trump more openly in 2024. In a surprising turn, Musk endorsed Trump in July 2024, shortly after an assassination attempt on the former president. Musk argued that Trump's victory was necessary "to preserve democracy" and suggested Ohio Senator JD Vance as Trump's ideal running mate. Vance was eventually selected as Trump's vice-presidential candidate.
This endorsement aligns with Musk's growing influence within conservative circles. Musk made a notable appearance at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which is considered a key swing state. There, he referred to himself as a "dark MAGA" supporter, a reference to a more extreme version of Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan, signifying a hardline conservative stance.
Musk's PAC, America, has been active in supporting Trump's campaign by targeting swing states-regions that are critical to winning the presidential race. A report from The Wall Street Journal revealed that Musk had quietly contributed millions to Republican causes, especially to groups aligned with Trump and former Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis. A recent SEC filing showed that Musk had donated approximately $75 million to Trump's re-election bid between July and September 2024.
Musk's influence is also bolstered by his ownership of X, which has given him a unique platform to sway public opinion and mobilize voters. With his immense personal wealth and influence over one of the world's largest social media platforms, Musk has positioned himself as a key figure in the 2024 election cycle, making significant contributions to Trump's efforts to win over undecided voters in crucial swing states.
A New Era of Political Influence?
Musk's engagement in U.S. politics, particularly his active support for Trump, highlights the increasing role that tech billionaires are playing in shaping political discourse. His use of financial resources, along with the platform provided by X, allows him to influence public opinion in ways that few others can. Whether this will translate into tangible success for Trump in the 2024 elections remains to be seen, but Musk's influence and the unusual million-dollar incentives he's offering are making waves in the run-up to the polls.
