Quick-Thinking Bystanders Rescue 20-Year-Old Blind Cat from Icy Massachusetts Pond
A 20-year-old blind cat named Tiki, known for wandering outdoors, recently found himself in a precarious situation. The black-and-white feline was spotted on ice in a Massachusetts pond before falling into the water. Fortunately, a passerby and nearby construction workers were quick to respond, ensuring his rescue.

Passerby Dawn Felicani witnessed the incident and described her reaction: "The crackling happened, and I was like, hysterical," she said. "And all of a sudden, it fell in! Its little head was sticking out! I'm in tears, and I'm freaking out." She promptly contacted first responders and a local animal control officer.
Rescue Efforts at Nabnasset Pond
Two construction workers at a nearby site played a crucial role in Tiki's rescue. One worker climbed into a rowboat while the other helped push him out onto Nabnasset Pond. Using a shovel, the worker in the boat broke through the ice to reach Tiki and retrieve him from the freezing water.
Once rescued, Tiki was brought indoors, dried off with towels, and wrapped in blankets to warm up. Animal control officer Kirsten Hirschler noted that Tiki was shivering and lethargic when found. His body temperature was so low that it didn't register on the thermometer.
Possible Causes of the Incident
Hirschler speculated that Tiki might have been chased onto the ice by a predator, leading to his predicament. John Arden, Tiki's owner, mentioned that the cat usually doesn't wander far from home. Despite being blind for about a year, Tiki manages to navigate his surroundings well.
Arden shared that Tiki is recovering well and behaving as if nothing happened. He expressed that Tiki is quite frustrated about not being allowed outside again. Arden and his wife have cared for Tiki since he was a kitten.
The quick actions of those involved ensured Tiki's safety after his unexpected adventure on the ice. The incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and prompt response in animal rescues.
