YouTuber Alleges Pressure to Delete Video After Swiggy Agent Falls From Moving Train

A viral video showing a Swiggy delivery agent falling while attempting to get off a moving train has reignited concerns over gig worker safety, coming just weeks after industry leaders publicly highlighted the need for better protections for delivery partners.

The footage was filmed by YouTuber and Instagram user Bijay Anand, who documented the incident that occurred on the night of January 6. The video, which has since circulated widely on social media, shows the delivery agent losing balance as the train begins to move.

Anand has now alleged that he is being offered money to delete the video, a claim that has raised uncomfortable questions about whether image management is being prioritised over addressing deeper safety issues. He has said he will not take the video down.

What happened on the Prashanti Express

According to Anand, the incident took place on the Prashanti Express, train number 18464. He said the train halted at the station for barely one to two minutes. The passenger who ordered the food was travelling in First AC, which has multiple entry points.

"By the time the food was handed over, the train had already started," Anand wrote, adding that the delivery partner had to disembark quickly as he had other orders to complete, while his bike and delivery bag were parked outside the station.

In the rush to meet delivery timelines and avoid penalties, the agent allegedly attempted to get down after the train began moving, leading to the fall.

"This is not an accident. It is a failure of safety and responsibility," Anand said, calling for accountability and compensation for the injured worker.

Follow-up and condition of the delivery partner

In a follow-up post on January 8, Anand said he had contacted Anantapur MLA Daggupati Venkateswara Prasad to inquire about the incident. He confirmed that the delivery partner is safe but sustained multiple injuries.

"He was polite, calm and sincere. No complaints, no anger. Just a man trying to do his job," Anand wrote, noting that the agent reportedly paid a fine of ₹3,000 for violating railway rules despite being injured.

Social media backlash and delivery pressure

The incident triggered widespread reactions online, with users questioning the push for faster deliveries and the lack of clear safety protocols for train-based food orders.

Some users demanded a boycott of ultra-fast delivery services that risk workers' lives, while others pointed out that passengers should be required to collect food at the train door or platform instead of expecting seat-level delivery.

Several comments called for explicit in-app guidelines, stating that no food delivery should require a worker to enter crowded coaches or attempt to board or exit a moving train.

Gig worker safety back in focus

The timing of the incident has drawn particular attention, as it comes weeks after Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal publicly spoke about improving conditions for gig workers, including income stability and dignity of work. While platforms have increasingly highlighted welfare measures, critics argue that ground realities continue to expose delivery partners to serious risks.

The Swiggy incident has added to a growing list of cases that underline the gap between corporate assurances and on-field execution, especially when penalties and performance metrics are involved.

A Budget issue waiting to be addressed

With the Union Budget approaching, the episode has renewed calls for the government to formally address gig worker safety, insurance coverage and accountability frameworks. Industry watchers say the absence of clear, enforceable standards leaves workers vulnerable, particularly in high-risk delivery scenarios such as trains and highways.

As the debate intensifies, the question being asked is whether the focus will remain on managing fallout from viral videos, or whether policy action will finally catch up with the realities faced by India's expanding gig workforce.
