Year Ender 2024: Biggest Surprising Results In Lok Sabha Elections 2024
The results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections have delivered unexpected outcomes, shaking the confidence of many political observers.
BJP Loses Majority but Secures Power
After forming consecutive majority governments in 2014 and 2019, the BJP fell short of a majority in 2024. This result defied most poll predictions, which had projected the party would surpass 300 seats comfortably. Despite the setback, the NDA retained power with the help of its allies.

Congress Makes Significant Gains
The Congress, a key player in the opposition INDIA bloc, saw a remarkable jump, winning 99 seats compared to just 52 in 2019. The party made notable inroads in Rajasthan and Haryana, eating into the BJP's vote share.
Regional Players Strengthen Opposition Bloc
Uttar Pradesh: The Samajwadi Party bolstered the INDIA bloc by securing 37 seats.
West Bengal: The Trinamool Congress increased its tally from 22 to 29, while the BJP's seats dropped to 12 from 18.
Tamil Nadu: The INDIA bloc achieved a clean sweep, capturing all 39 seats and leaving the BJP without representation in the state.
Key Upsets and Milestones
- Amethi: Congress stalwart Kishori Lal defeated BJP minister Smriti Irani, reclaiming this symbolic seat.
- Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held onto his seat, but with a noticeably reduced margin compared to previous elections.
- Faizabad (Ayodhya): BJP lost this high-profile constituency, even after the Ram temple's inauguration earlier this year.
- Mumbai North West: The NDA candidate edged out a win by just 48 votes, underscoring the tight competition.
- Kerala: For the first time, BJP secured a seat in Kerala, with actor Suresh Gopi achieving this landmark victory.
- Gujarat: Congress broke the BJP's decade-long dominance by winning a seat in Modi's home state.
Maharashtra's Fragmented Outcome
The state saw a divided verdict among various parties:
- Congress: 13 seats
- Shiv Sena (UBT): 9 seats
- NCP (Sharad Pawar faction): 9 seats
- BJP: 9 seats
- Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction): 7 seats
- NCP (Ajit Pawar faction): 1 seat
The Scale of Democracy
With over 640 million votes cast, the elections, conducted across seven phases from April 19 to June 1, were a testament to India's vibrant democracy.
