Yashtika Acharya’s Death: How a Single Misstep Led to a Powerlifting Tragedy

Yashtika Acharya's Death: A 17-year-old powerlifting champion tragically lost her life while training at a gym in Rajasthan's Bikaner district, raising concerns over gym safety protocols.

Yashtika Acharya, a national-level powerlifter, was attempting a 270kg squat when she lost her balance and fell backward. The heavy barbell landed on her neck, causing a fatal injury. A video of the horrifying incident soon went viral on social media.

Acharya had previously won a gold medal in the National Bench Press Championship held in Goa in October last year, competing in the Sub Junior 84kg and above category.

Reports suggest this was her second attempt at the lift, with the first being successful. Despite the presence of her coach and spotter, Ashish, who was assisting her, he was unable to prevent the accident. He also sustained injuries in the process.

Naya Shahar SHO Vikram Tiwari confirmed that Acharya was rushed to the hospital immediately after the accident but was declared dead on arrival. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The police also noted that her family has not filed any complaint. Following a post-mortem examination, her body was handed over to her family on Wednesday.

Powerlifting is a competitive strength sport where athletes attempt to lift the maximum weight in three disciplines-squat, bench press, and deadlift.
