World's Most Overworked Nations: India's Rank May Surprise You | Deets Inside
In India, the average workweek stretches to 46.7 hours for each person holding a job, as reported by the International Labour Organisation.
This statistic places India among the nations with the highest number of hours worked, highlighting a major challenge in achieving work-life balance.

Moreover, more than half of India's employed population, about 51%, spends over 49 hours per week at work, securing the country's position as second globally for extended working hours.
The issue of long working hours is not unique to India alone but is prevalent across several South Asian countries. Bhutan leads the list, with 61% of its workforce surpassing the 49-hour workweek mark.
Close behind, Bangladesh and Pakistan have 47 percent and 40% of their workforces, respectively, engaged in lengthy workweeks. These figures reveal a regional pattern where a substantial portion of workers are committed to long hours.
Global Perspective on Working Hours
In contrast to South Asia's work culture, nations such as Vanuatu boast the shortest average workweeks, highlighting huge disparities in global labor trends.
Employees in Vanuatu enjoy an average workweek of just 24.7 hours, the briefest across all surveyed countries.
Additionally, a mere 4% of Vanuatu's workforce exceeds the 49-hour threshold, showcasing a stark difference when compared to the demanding work schedules in countries like India and Bhutan.
Other countries with lesser working hours include Kiribati and the Federated States of Micronesia, where the average workweek clocks in at 27.3 and 30.4 hours, respectively.
Here, only a small fraction of the workforce-10 percent in Kiribati and 2% in Micronesia-engage in extended hours.
These Pacific island nations present a more relaxed approach to work, starkly contrasting the demanding schedules prevalent in India and its South Asian neighbors.
Comparing Work Hours Globally
Interestingly, countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Lesotho report high average weekly working hours-50.9 and 50.4 hours respectively.
Despite these figures, India stands out for the sheer volume of its workforce working over the 49-hour benchmark.
On the other hand, nations like Aruba, China, Croatia, Georgia, Germany, Isle of Man, Japan, Jersey, and Singapore have average workweeks ranging from 34.2 to 46.1 hours, with none of their workers exceeding 49 hours per week.
This extensive variance in working hours across the globe sparks critical debates regarding labour policies and the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
The data underscores the need for countries, especially those with exceedingly long workweeks like India, to reconsider and potentially reform their work culture and labor laws.
In conclusion, the disparity in working hours worldwide, from India's lengthy workweeks to Vanuatu's significantly shorter work schedules, highlights a global divide in work cultures and labor practices.
While some nations grapple with the challenges of overwork, others enjoy a more balanced approach, underscoring the importance of policies that promote a healthy work-life balance for the well-being of the global workforce.
