World Menopause Day: Women More Aware of Menopausal Issues
On World Menopause Day, experts discuss the significance of this occasion in the context of women's health and the increasing awareness of menopausal issues among women.
On the occasion of World Menopause Day, experts in Kolkata highlighted the growing awareness of menopausal issues among women in recent years. Menopause, a natural phase in every woman's life when ovaries stop producing estrogen and other sex hormones, typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55.
Increasing Number of Women Seeking Guidance

Dr. Swati Mishra, Consultant at Birla Fertility and IVF Clinic, shared data indicating a significant increase in women seeking guidance and treatment for menopausal symptoms in Kolkata. She mentioned that over the past five years, the clinic has witnessed a 30 percent rise in such cases. Common challenges experienced by women during menopause include hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and osteoporosis concerns.
Significance of World Menopause Day
World Menopause Day serves as a crucial platform to address the often-overlooked challenges faced by women as they transition into menopause. Dr. Pervinder Kaur, a senior obstetrician-gynaecologist, shared that she receives an average of 25-30 patients each month with menopause-related issues. The increasing number of women seeking help, including those inquiring about early menopause, is seen as a positive sign as it allows for timely intervention and management.
Raising Awareness and Breaking Stigma
World Menopause Day aims to raise awareness levels and remove the stigma associated with menopause, ultimately improving the health and well-being of women. Dr. Mishra emphasized the need for society to foster a greater understanding of menopause and its impact on women's lives. By raising awareness and offering support, women can be empowered to manage menopausal changes more effectively.
Impact on Mental Health
Consultant obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Arathi Bharat highlighted the significant impact of menopause on mental health. Studies have shown that the incidence of depression doubles during menopause, and mood swings are a common symptom. Low estrogen levels can lead to anxiety, despair, and irritability, causing significant emotional fluctuations.
Importance of Training Medical Staff
Dr. Bharat emphasized the need to raise awareness about menopause among women and provide adequate training to medical staff to address their concerns effectively. She stressed the importance of providing hope to postmenopausal women and eradicating the stigma associated with menopause. Lack of awareness can lead to misidentification of symptoms and potentially harmful health effects. Women's mental health during this phase of life should be prioritized, and appropriate support systems should be in place.
The increasing awareness of menopausal issues among women in India is a positive step towards recognizing and addressing the challenges faced during this natural phase of life. World Menopause Day plays a vital role in raising awareness, breaking down stigma, and providing the necessary support to women as they navigate the transition into menopause.
