French Envoy Amélie de Montchalin Stresses Global Unity on Climate Issues at OECD
A senior French diplomat highlighted the importance of achieving economic growth without harming the environment. Amélie de Montchalin, France's Permanent Representative to the OECD, stressed that global unity is essential in addressing climate issues. She made these remarks during a media interaction at the French Embassy in New Delhi, focusing on financing the green transition and artificial intelligence.

Climate and Economic Development
Montchalin emphasised that economic development must be sustainable. She stated, "You cannot bring economic prosperity by destroying the planet. This approach will not work in the long term." She added that combating climate change is about safeguarding people, the planet, and humanity's future. The diplomat underscored India's crucial role in climate discussions, saying, "We cannot talk about climate and development without considering India."
Financing the Green Transition
To finance the green transition effectively, Montchalin called for robust public financing institutions at both local and international levels. She also highlighted the need for private investors to participate actively. The diplomat pointed out that countries like India are increasingly experiencing climate shocks such as heatwaves and floods, which are part of a broader global crisis.
Global Unity on Climate Issues
Montchalin stressed that dividing the world on climate issues is not an option. "We need global unity," she asserted. She emphasised aligning development goals with environmental preservation as a priority for nations. Achieving economic prosperity without endangering the planet is crucial.
Artificial Intelligence Implications
Discussing artificial intelligence, Montchalin explored its broad implications, ranging from innovation to societal impacts. The OECD, based in France, aims to create better policies for improved lives. According to its official website, it draws on over 60 years of experience to shape policies fostering prosperity and opportunity underpinned by equality and well-being.
The diplomat's remarks underscore the necessity of integrating sustainability into economic planning while ensuring global cooperation on climate challenges.
