Won't Resign ‘At This Crucial Juncture’: Manipur CM Biren Singh

N Biren Singh on Friday announced that he will not be resigning as the Chief Minister of Manipur after his supporters urged him to drop his plan.

"At this crucial juncture, I wish to clarify that I will not be resigning from the post of Chief Minister", Singh tweeted.

There was a lot of drama outside his house as his supporters prevented him from meeting the Governor. "We do not want the CM to resign, he should not resign. He is doing a lot of work for us. We are in giving support the CM," ANI quoted his supporters are saying.

They also tore his resignation letter.

He has come under attack for the handling of Manipur violence since it broke out on May 3.

"We have been under a situation of turmoil since 2 months. We are looking for the day when the Govt of India and Manipur will resolve this conflict in a democratic manner. In such a situation if the Manipur CM resigns, how will the people live here? Who will lead us? He has been leading us from the beginning of the conflict. I do not want him to resign. We trust him," says a local of Manipur.

More than 100 people have lost their lives in the ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in the northeastern state so far. Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals -- Nagas and Kukis -- constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts.
