Woman Arrested in Nagpur After Fatal Mercedes Crash Under DUI
A woman accused of fatally hitting two men with her Mercedes while allegedly intoxicated surrendered to police in Nagpur on Monday, over four months after the incident. Ritika alias Ritu Maloo turned herself in at a city police station and was formally arrested after questioning, officials stated.

Late last month, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court denied Maloo's request for pre-arrest bail, citing that no sensible person would drive under the influence of alcohol and labelling it as serious misconduct. The incident took place on February 25 on Ram Jhula bridge in Nagpur when Maloo allegedly drove her car recklessly and collided with two men on a scooter.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Initially, Maloo faced charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving and causing hurt by a rash act. However, following public outcry and considering the severity of the crash, additional charges including culpable homicide were added by the police.
The victims, Mohd Hussain Gulam Mustafa and Mohd Ateef Mohd Zia, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Maloo was initially granted bail but later, police sought to arrest her again, prompting her to seek pre-arrest bail from the High Court.
High Court's Stance
The High Court's refusal to grant pre-arrest bail highlighted the gravity of driving under the influence. "No prudent person drives under the influence of alcohol," stated the court, underscoring the seriousness of such actions.
Following her surrender, Maloo will be presented in a local court on Tuesday, according to police sources. The case has drawn significant attention due to its tragic outcome and the subsequent legal developments.
The incident has sparked discussions about road safety and the consequences of driving under the influence. Authorities have reiterated the importance of adhering to traffic laws to prevent such tragedies.
This case serves as a reminder of the severe repercussions that can arise from reckless driving and alcohol consumption. It underscores the need for stringent enforcement of traffic regulations to ensure public safety.
