Winter Session Of Parliament To End In Turmoil With Protests, Scuffle, Multiple FIRs | Key Pointers

The Winter Session of Parliament will conclude today, bringing to an end four weeks of intense drama, sharp remarks, and even accusations of 'attempt to murder' against the Opposition - with fresh protests expected on the final day.

Here are the top 10 points from the Winter Session:

1. The government is expected to introduce the 'One Nation, One Election' bill today, proposing the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee consisting of 27 Lok Sabha MPs and 12 Rajya Sabha MPs, as the Winter Session draws to a close on a turbulent note.

2. The past few weeks have been marked by frequent disruptions and protests. The latest impasse has led to a police case against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi after the BJP filed a complaint over two of its MPs being injured during a protest at Parliament's Makar Dwar.

3. The Congress, which has also filed a police complaint alleging that party chief Mallikarjun Kharge was injured after being pushed by BJP MPs, has called the case against Gandhi a "badge of honour". "A case against him for defending Babasaheb's legacy is a badge of honour," said Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal.

4. BJP MPs Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, who are now in hospital, suffered injuries during parallel protests from both the Treasury and Opposition benches outside Parliament.

5. The protests were sparked by Union Home Minister Amit Shah's comments in the Rajya Sabha, in which he claimed that mentioning BR Ambedkar's name had become a "fashion," which the opposition deemed as "insulting". "It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they had taken God's name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven," Shah had said.

6. While Shah has accused the Opposition of distorting facts and using clipped videos, Congress and Trinamool have moved a privilege motion against him and demanded his resignation.

7. Shah has refused to resign, stating it would not resolve Congress's problems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, backing Shah, claimed that Congress is using "malicious lies to hide their misdeeds."

8. Congress has also accused the BJP of orchestrating the violence to divert attention from the Ambedkar row. In response, the BJP has accused the Opposition party of disrespecting the architect of the Constitution.

9. Sources revealed that after yesterday's chaos, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla issued strict instructions banning protests at any of the Parliament House gates. He also directed MPs not to block any of the gates.

10. The Winter Session also saw Congress struggling to garner support from its allies, Trinamool and Samajwadi Party, over its key agendas. Both parties called for a functioning parliament and distanced themselves from Congress over the Adani row and the George Soros link claims made by the BJP.
