Will Lockdown Return In Kerala Over Nipah Outbreak?
The Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala has raised concerns about the possibility of a lockdown being imposed in the state. The virus is highly contagious and can be fatal, and the government is taking steps to contain the spread.
On Thursday, the Kozhikode District Collector A Geetha declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the district. She also said that educational institutions could arrange online classes on the two days for students. However, there will be no change in university exams schedule, she said.

This is the first time that a holiday has been declared in Kerala due to the Nipah outbreak. It is a sign that the government is taking the situation seriously and is prepared to take further measures if necessary.
The Kerala government has already imposed lockdown-like restrictions in the containment zones, which include a ban on public gatherings and the closure of schools and businesses.
It is possible that the government could impose a lockdown in Kerala if the Nipah outbreak worsens. However, it must be noted that the state government has not made any such announcement on lockdown yet.
It is important to note that a lockdown is a drastic measure and should only be used as a last resort. A lockdown can have a significant negative impact on the economy and society.
Spike in Nipah cases:
On Wednesday, a 24-year-old healthcare worker became the fifth confirmed Nipah case in Kerala during the recent outbreak.
Simultaneously, in the neighboring district of Wayanad, a 24-hour control room was established in response to the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode. The Wayanad district administration also formed 15 core committees tasked with leading prevention and surveillance efforts, effectively managing emergency situations.
The virus strain identified in the state is the Bangladesh variant, which has a high mortality rate and spreads from human to human, albeit with lower infectiousness, according to government statements.
State Health Minister Veena George reported that the condition of all 76 individuals classified as high-risk contacts remains stable.
Additionally, the government noted that 13 other individuals with mild symptoms are under hospital monitoring, with only a 9-year-old child among the infected individuals requiring treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.

Veena George also explained that the Kerala government has established 19 committees to oversee the Nipah virus outbreak in the state.
"We have introduced a telemedicine service and set up 19 committees to diligently monitor the Nipah virus situation. As of now, individuals classified as high-risk have not displayed any symptoms," stated Veena George.
Elaborating further, she mentioned that the travel routes of the deceased have been made public, and individuals in the high-risk category are advised to remain indoors. If any symptoms arise, they are encouraged to reach out to the call center.
Check Guidelines in Containment Zones:
-
In containment zones, residents were instructed to adhere to social distancing measures, wear masks, and utilize hand sanitisers.
- Entry and exit to and from containment zones have been strictly forbidden, and barriers will be positioned at the entrance of each ward.
- Medical stores and essential retail establishments are permitted to operate within containment zones, with business hours limited to 7 am to 5 pm. However, medical shops, health centers, and hospitals within the containment zones can operate without time restrictions.
- Banks, schools, and anganwadi centers will remain closed until further notice.
- Public road transportation is prohibited within containment zones.
- Vehicles traveling on national and state highways are prohibited from stopping within the confines of the containment zones.
