Why Was Manoj Kumar Arrested At Cochin Airport For A Bomb Comment?

A significant security incident unfolded at Cochin International Airport on Sunday morning when a passenger, identified as Manoj Kumar, 42, was arrested for making a concerning comment during routine security checks.

Kumar, who was scheduled to fly from Kochi to Mumbai on Air India flight AI 682, allegedly asked a CISF officer at the X-ray Baggage Inspection System (XBIS) if there was a bomb in his bag.

Immediate Response and Inspection

The comment prompted an immediate and serious response from airport authorities. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was called to conduct a thorough inspection of Kumar's cabin and checked baggage, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Despite the gravity of the situation, no explosives or other threats were discovered in the inspected items. Following the inspection, Kumar was deboarded from the flight and handed over to the local police for further questioning and investigation.

Airport Security Protocols

The use of terms such as "bomb" and "hijack" is treated with extreme seriousness at airports due to their potential to cause panic and disrupt operations. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, which is responsible for setting security standards at both domestic and international airports in India, has strict guidelines against making such threats, even in jest, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The guidelines emphasize that any mention of a threat can lead to delays, increased scrutiny, and possible legal repercussions for travellers.

Previous Incidents of Bomb Scares

This incident follows a similar occurrence in June this year, where a passenger on the Air India flight from Kochi to London Gatwick was arrested for making a false bomb threat. Shuhaib, 30, from Kondotty in Malappuram, had made the threat during a call to Air India's customer care after his request to reschedule the flight was denied. The threat was determined to be a hoax, and Shuhaib was subsequently arrested.

Heightened Security Measures

In light of the Independence Day celebrations, security measures at all airports, including Cochin International Airport, have been heightened through August 20. Authorities have advised travellers to expect longer processing times due to increased security protocols. To ensure a smooth journey, travellers are encouraged to arrive at the airport well in advance of their flight times.

The arrest of Manoj Kumar underscores the critical importance of adhering to airport security regulations and the serious consequences of making inappropriate comments during security checks. The heightened security measures and thorough inspections aim to maintain safety and prevent any potential threats, especially during periods of heightened alert.
